Italian Wine "Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi" : color , aroma , food matches and prices

Italian White Wines from Marche Region - Verdicchio dei castelli di jesi

History: “Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi” is the best known wine of the Marches region. When we talk about Marche region in the wine-context, the “Verdicchio dei castelli di Jesi is associated to it. Wine known throughout the world thanks to the original and exclusive bottle in the shape of amphora, designed by the architect Mr. Maiocchi in the 50’s, to exploit in addition to wine also the beauty and the winding of the Marche region. However the history of “the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi” is characterized by high and low periods. A strong period in the 1960s, thanks to the huge quantity exported, periods of dimming have followed during the next decade, due mainly to the lack of quality for the great request on the market. It has become strong again from the 80’s, thanks to the intuition of some companies that studying and examining “Verdicchio’s” clones, have managed to extract a wine with an huge personality and longevity giving to the “Verdicchio “and lasting and consolidated in the world wine environment. In the 2009 the DOCG appellation was given to the “Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi” and to the “Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Riserva”

The grape: to be called “Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi” the wine must be produced with a minimum percentage of Verdicchio Grape (85%). The remaining part (15%) could be formed by “Tuscan Malvasia grape” or "Tuscan Trebbiano Grape”

Regions of production : The various regions of production are very important to distinguish between “Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi” and “Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico”: only the wine production of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi in the most ancient part of the region can boast itself of the appellation “CLASSICO”. The concerned districts are those located near the valleys of Esino’s river, in particular the zones starting from the cities of Ostra-Arcevia to the south up to Cupramontana-Apiro. Over this quadranglar zone, considering also the towns of Cingoli, Senigallia and Jesi the Verdicchio dei Catelli di Jesi is produced in the classic version.

Color , aroma and flavor : It is a wine with great smells and sensations. Structured, full-bodied, elegant and it introduce itself with a straw yellow colour with green reflections (this characteristic gives the name Verdicchio) which put in evidence the fragrance, vivacity and remarkable freshness. Smell passes from strong flowers’ aromas of hawthorn to a fresh fruit smell of peach, apple and light sensation of citrus fruit. Unmistakable aftertaste of bitter almonds. It is interesting to note how in the left-side valley of the Esino’s river lots of mineral sensations are perceived and to note how easy is too pass to an higher flavour produced in the opposite valley.
